Why Illinois? – What factors helped contribute to your decision to attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign?
I chose to go to University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign because of all the opportunities undergraduates have to gain hands-on experience in their fields of study. Illinois is a top-tier research institute and as a transfer student from a small college, having access to a multitude of research opportunities was a priority. The NRES program in and of itself was also a huge draw because it boasts top-tier professors and a wide variety of courses as well as different concentrations within the major.
Why NRES? – Specifically, why did you choose to study Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences?
I decided to study environmental science because I want to make a difference in the world, especially as we’re facing a growing environmental crisis. I took an introductory environmental course at my previous school and one of the topics focused on the contamination of the North Branch of the Chicago River. This lesson was the catalyst for my ultimate decision to pursue a degree in natural resources and environmental science with a focus of water science and water quality.
